The grocery store used to be a model of stability and predictability. Shoppers knew what their weekly staples would cost, giving them a sense of control over their household budgets. But today's reality is markedly different. Our recent survey of 2,000 American consumers revealed that 61% have experienced higher grocery prices in the six months leading up to the report, with average monthly spending up by $61.49 beginning in August 2024. And the challenges continue to mount. 

The market pressures are relentless: Tariffs are reshaping supply chains, labor costs are climbing amid widespread union activity and global conflicts are disrupting trade routes. Against this backdrop, our survey revealed a striking disconnect: Only 33% of consumers believe prices should increase when production costs rise. Even more telling, 29% demand more transparency in how prices are set. 

While rising costs dominate headlines and boardroom discussions, the deeper challenge lies in maintaining consumer trust. Without it, even justified price increases can irreparably damage customer relationships.
